I recently had the opportunity to explore one of Arkansas’s most fascinating archaeological sites: Plum Bayou Mounds State Park , located in the southeast part of the state. Formerly known as Toltec Mounds, this park preserves the remnants of an ancient civilization that thrived in the Mississippi River Valley over 1,000 years ago. Ancient History Beneath Your Feet Walking among the carefully constructed mounds built by the Plum Bayou culture was nothing short of awe-inspiring. These earthworks—ceremonial, residential, and possibly astronomical in purpose—were meticulously designed and constructed.
